The
Florida High School Athletic Association, forerunner of the Florida High
School Activities Association, was founded in 1920 by a group of 29 high
school principals meeting on the University of Florida campus in Gainesville.
These schools became charter members of the association. The first Constitution
limited membership to public schools. However, in 1930, it was amended to
open membership to private and parochial schools as well.
In 1951, the member schools voted to change the word "athletic" to "activities"
in the organization name so that non-athletic activities such as music and
student council programs would also receive proper supervision at the state
level.
The Association was incorporated in 1962.
The FHSAA, in 1996, adopted regulations permitting students enrolled in
home education programs to participate in interscholastic activities.
In May 1997, the Florida Legislature recognized in statute the FHSAA as
the governing body for interscholastic athletics in Florida, provided the
Association comply with the provisions of a legislatively mandated revamping
of its governmental structure. The FHSAA currently is in the process of
making the necessary changes to comply with the new law.
The FHSAA has shown a steady growth throughout its 83-year history. Currently,
the FHSAA has a membership of approximately 670 schools. |

group of young ladies returning this 2008 volleyball season and we are
all extremely excited about the many opportunities for their individual

it. We have dreams for our court; we welcome 2008.

Lakeland Uses Balance To Beat George Jenkins
By Roy Fuoco
THE LEDGER

Lakeland knows that it can't depend soley on Krista Andersen if it wants to achieve
its lofty goals this season.
The Dreadnaughts showed they won't have to depend just on their 6-foot-1 star. They
had plenty of balance in their 25-14, 25-20, 25-12 victory over George Jenkins Thursday
night in the season opener for both teams.
Andersen certainly had her typical game, 21 kills, four solo blocks, five digs and
three aces, despite going through a couple of spurts where she was hitting long,
wide or being blocked.
Hope Andreadis, however, showed that if teams are simply going to focus their defense
around Andersen, she'll make them pay. A 5-9 sophomore, Andreadis took advantage
of strong sets by Lauren Andersen (32 assists, seven digs) and blasted 13 kills,
finding open hitting lanes and holes in the George Jenkins defense.

Krista Andersen Does It All for Dreadnaughts
By Roy Fuoco
THE LEDGER

The Lakeland volleyball team was a senior-dominated group in 2005, but there was
no missing the then 6-foot Krista Andersen among all the upperclassmen.
Even then, she stood out, and if she wasn't the Dreadnaughts' best natural volleyball
player back then, there was no denying her upside.
Now entering her senior year, there's no question about who is the Dreadnaughts'
best player. Andersen is arguably the best player in the county, and having committed
to a Division I school in the Big East (Villanova), she is part of any discussion
about the best players in the state.
